Certain points may be made:
Firstly the punishment is not something invented yesterday. It goes back to the start of Islam, and is repeatedly stated by all the great authorities of Islam. No Muslim could be unaware of the terrible consequences of such an offence.

Secondly, the Islamic Law gives ways out for the person making the insulting statements. If a person made a sincere mistake, there is a way out.

Thirdly, no one can be punished unless the offence is absolutely certain, and proved beyond doubt. And so the only person who is punished is the person who is totally and completely determined to insult the Prophet (Sall Allahu Alaihi wa Sallam). They bring the punishment upon themselves.
